CF-27 Hard drive upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my cf-27 HD from the 6gb that is installed to a 60gb. Can anyone give me any sites or companies that carry these? Have not had any luck yet searching the engines. Thanks

Reply 1 : CF-27 Hard drive upgrade

the drives are standard 2.5 inch IDE (PATA) hardrives.

there is nothing special about them. i dunno where you live, so i cant give you any good sites. but check the local computer store.

Reply 2 : CF-27 Hard drive upgrade

You can put any 2.5 inch pata laptop drive in it you want however if the drive is larger than 127 GB you will have to partition the drive with partitions less than 127 GB for it to be usable.

Indeed. Thanks for pointing that out. Neglected to inform the OP of that.

CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I restore the notebook with the restore disc from Panasonic and the touch screen doesn't. I was wondering if there is a broken fuses or bad sensor board.

How can I run diagnostics on the touch screen?

Thanks in Advances

Mee

Reply 1 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

This has all been said before.

Do this:

1. F2 into bios make sure Touch Screen is enabled.

2. Page over and set to defaults. [F10]

Provide your full model number. From first screen in bios.

Use this search engine for a LOT more information. Replace TEST with CF-18 FAQ for instance.

TEST site:forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic - Google Search

Reply 2 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

The touch screen is enabled in BIOs and its set to defaults. It still doesn't work. Here is the full model number: CF-18NHH2XBM

Reply 3 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

Did the touchscreen ever work?

Reply 4 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

yes it was working before the reload.

Reply 5 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I had a Cf 29 that the Touchscreen worked until I reloaded windows. The calibration was erased during the install and I could not recalibrate it. It turned out to be a hardware failure of the touchscreen.

Reply 6 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

Okay, did you end up replacing the screen then? By the way you have any step to prevent this from happen again if reload is needed?

Reply 7 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I repaired the screen. Same outcome as if I replaced the screen. With a good screen the reload will not cause a problem. After the screen replacement/repair, I reloaded WinXP twice with no problem.

Reply 8 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I "fixed" a TS the other day by unplugging and re-seating two plugs. In the TSPCB in the screen. I'm not sure which one was the culprit but suspect the ribbon tape from the Touch Panel. I was careful to not pull on the ribbon tape so as not to disturb the ribbon where it goes into the TS panel. I first removed and re-set the connector under the keyboard but this didn't help.

Which CPU fan model for HP s5310y slimline desktop?

I have a very noisy tic-tic-tic noise coming from one of my CPU fans. I cleaned the dust but see that the fan appears to be defective, as it's sliding horizontally out of place somewhat. In fact, if I tilt my machine and allow gravity to work its magic, the fan slides to where it should be rotating and the noise stops. Therefore, I think I need to replace the fan. The machine is less than a year old and works really well besides this one flaw.

Can someone tell me which model of CPU fan I need and where I can buy it online? I'm not much of a tech gal, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Reply 1 : Which CPU fan model for HP s5310y slimline desktop?

But I will write how I replace such fans.

I pull the fan out and note if it's some 3 pin or 4 pin connection. Then I look at newegg.com, geeks.com for something close. Then I get out my ruler to measure my fan and compare it to the units I found. One last step is to see if the Voltage is the same (within a volt is fine for fans.)

Hope this helps,
Bob

Reply 2 : Which CPU fan model for HP s5310y slimline desktop?

Thanks, Bob; I will give that a shot when I am ready to replace.

From other research I've done online, I've also determined that based on my processor (AMD Athlon II x 2 250), I'll need a "socket AM3" and some thermal grease to allow for some heat transference.

Best,
Chrissy

The case fan is retained by a screw and a metal clip, Try reseating the fan, noticing how it just clips in, and is held by the single screw. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01949721.pdf

Momentus XT Firmware Update

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but SD25 Firmware has been released by Seagate. This would apply to you if you have the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid drive(s) in your laptop.

I looked for a change log and couldn't find one. I installed the update on my G73JH via the Windows Installer. It worked perfectly. Please note that my machine did not come with this drive. I purchased one about a year later so mine is a retail version although I'm not aware of any difference between the OEM and retail drives.

Reply 1 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

Updated to sd25 aswell, sometime last week, but I cannot see any difference between sd25 and sd24.

Make sure to turn the hdds to IDE in bios before updating, otherwise it will not work.

Reply 2 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

Thanks. I don't have an XT in my G73 but I do have one in my nVidia ION netbook. Can't tell any differences either but still nice to have the latest.

Not sure why but I left my drives on AHCI and it flashed the new firmware just fine. Didn't see the warning to switch it in time but all went just fine for me... on the netbook.

Reply 3 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

AHCI mode will flash fine. Only RAID fails to work when flashing firmware (even if that drive is not part of a RAID array)

Reply 4 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

thx 4 news

Reply 5 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

Thanks for the post I will try to install it tonight.

It's being 2 months that I have this drive installed and didn't have any issue for now.

Reply 6 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

@Jody: just flashed the SW lappy to SD25. Pretty straight-forward using the Windows Installer.

I wish I knew what it fixes. I wasn't having any problems with the drive so I haven't noticed an improvement per se. The drive makes a machine boot pretty quickly but then everything from there on out seems to run at the same speed to me. If you launch a program a couple of times it will launch quickly until you reboot. I could see it being much handier on a machine that stays running for long periods of time. I shut mine down and take it to work every day so it never really builds up a useful cache other than bootup files.

Reply 8 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

I know one thing it fixes... it will update OEM Seagate drives without needing to do a force update, unlike SD24's installer.

Reply 9 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

True lol.

Anyway, for me it didnt install the firmware in AHCI mode, that's why I mentioned about switching to IDE earlier.

T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

I wanna (finally) replace my 7 year old X40 and the 2 contenders at the moment are the T420 or the X220. Based on the option for a 1600x900 screen on the T420 I'm leaning towards the T420, the X220 would only mean a change from 1024x768 to 1366x768 and I would love some extra vertical space.

To be honest, I was on the verge of ordering a T420, but when the first reviews came out.. mediocre screen quality for a $1500+ laptop? The poor screen quality of the T420 being my only reason not to order it,

I would really like some honest, first hand opinions. If possible, could T420 owners compare the screen in real life usage (browser, text-editor, youtube, photo editing, watching DVD etc.) to other laptops they own(ed)?

(I'm assuming by the way T420 and T420s screens are the same)

Some quotes:

"Display Colors : Though it would be manageable to watch movies with this color reproduction, the experience might not be enjoyable for visually acute users. The coverage of color spectrum is below average, making colors look far from authentic and incomparable to real life experience"

"Contrast : This contrast can be simply described as bad. Black areas resemble a shade of dark gray, and whites look dirty"

"Viewing Angle : Looking at the screen from the side causes color distortions"

Source: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 NW183GEReview

"The matte screen has m maximum brightness of 200 cd /. The contrast is also very low. At maximum brightness, the ratio of 158:1, which is unacceptable for a device of this price range"

Translated with Google, source: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 NW4NGGE im Test Halbwchsiger Office-Star auf notebookjournal.de

"I was so disheartened to see how bad the T420 display is. The viewing angles are terrible. Tilt the lid so that the bottom part of the screen is focused and the top part of the screen becomes a blurred washed out mess. Images are so washed out that they almost appear black and white"

Source: forum.thinkpads.com • View topic - T420 display among the worst I've ever seen :-(

"1600x900 16:9 250 nits, 300:1, fairly narrow viewing angle, particularly vertical direction. Tt seems the pixels are not very tight, sometimes look 'grid-dy'"

hmm. Well I wish I'd seen these before I put in my order for a T420s.

I don't worry too much about viewing angel but am a little concerned about the gridiness...

Two different users share their opinion of the T420 screen quality in the first page of this thread.

When I ordered my 14.1 Widescreen 1440x900 T61, the number one complaint was screen quality. However, when I checked out similarly priced laptops available locally, I discovered that they had the same screen quality issues - the glossy screens just made them less noticeable. So I decided it was an acceptable risk, and the screen has worked fine for my purposes.

Hope this helps.

Reply 5 : T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

I guess I'll find out when my T420 arrives, though estimated ship date is not until 4/26.

When that happens, I'll be happy to compare my T400's WXGA+ display, the T420 HD+ 1600x900, and any similar Dell systems I have at work (I may have an E6410 I can locate) and let people know. It will be somewhat subjective, but I'll do what I can.

I will say I'd rather have more screen real estate from top-to-bottom than on the sides. I think most of us business-class users would rather be able to see more of a web page or a document than be able to match movie resolutions. I wish I could still choose 16:10.

Reply 6 : T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

I think the 1600x900 screen on the T420s is fine. Stellar? No way. But it's a normal business class 250 nit screen. I could certainly use it as my day-to-day machine.

It really depends on the app mix.

Reply 7 : T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

Seems many 14' could have been fiited with better screens. For the price and in these days, 'acceptable' or 'good enough' is imo not good enough, Knowing the 510520 screens are far superior in many areas, what could be the problem in using a 14' variant of these 15' screens. Whatever the reason, had a 420 order ready to go (NW182MN) + xtra 9cell, in stock & 2 days delivery, but stopped when coming across the screen tests Otherwise, it looked like the perfect investment. Back to the drawing board for now.

Some screen tests comparisions listed in T420 T520 reviews: screen differences.

I'm in the exact same situation, replacing an X40 and wanting a higher vertical resolution (and, preferably, not too much lower physical screen height). I finally decided on the T420 (delivery next week ), after having seen the entire new Thinkpad lineup and my old X40 next to each other at Lenovo's offices here in Stockholm.

In short, if you're used to the X40's screen, the one of the T420 is nothing but an improvement. It's as good or better in all regards. It's also far behind a modern, bright IPS screen. But at least for me, that doesn't matter. I'm used to the X40 (and the T61, which I had at work until recently), and the T420 has a screen that is at least as good as those.

In other words, my guess is you won't be disappointed, as long as you're not expecting a miracle.

Thanks, just the kind of info I was hoping for. Guess like many others I'm trying to compare the T420 screen to the o so perfect (according to the reviewers) X220 IPS panel. Thanks to clever marketing I suddenly seem to need a laptop with USB3.0, IPS panel, 1TB SSD, 25 hours of battery life and 1920x1080 resolution on a 11.6" screen

You are right, anything I buy now will be a big improvement over my current laptop, even if it would be a T400 or X200.

And about expecting a miracle, well, would like to see a Dutch shop that sells a T420 at US prices..

(Congratulations on your T420, would love some T420/X40 side by side pictures)

I have a problem like this:

YouTube - PC Laptop Monitor Error: Vivid Vertical Green Lines | HELP PLEASE!

its not all the time, but still.. sometimes its doing that (with blue no green)

the problem is the LCD or the chipset?

Reply 1 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

gpu maybe?

everything can be replaced. chipset and gpu need to be resoldered using infrared soldering agreagate (7000$, not every repair shop has it)

Reply 2 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

I tested it, and I have to replace this I think: NVIDIA G84-600-A2 BGA Chipset 8600M with Warranty | eBay

how do I do it?? with infrared soldering ??

Reply 3 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

you can't do it on your own. only repair service. and they will take 100-250$ for that.

Reply 4 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

oh... ok thank you

Reply 5 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

negotiate with them. 100$ is good price for them for 5-10 minutes work. You can disassembly laptop and bring a motherboard only with chipset to even lower the prise but how will you guarantee that it worked before if they spoil smth? And make sure they will use Infrared Soldering Station not a hot air one which is more risky

Reply 6 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

do you think 230$ is a good price?(work + warranty plus the chipset)

Reply 7 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

warranty is what must be no matter what. This price includes search of the chipset, buying it and disassembling reassembling laptop. Still I think 200$ would be a limit for that. If you buy chipset your self it must reduce 70-50$. It depends if they are rednecks there or good trusted guys

Reply 8 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

I think your laptop uses MXM cards....

You could just buy something newer/better for about 100$

720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

So anyone else try to use the webcam at the 720p setting? Every time I try, the program freezes up. I'm looking into this and nothing seems to help--disabling FastAccess, reinstalling the program and drivers... Any ideas, or have you tried this out yourself?

I'm using the webcam at 720p and have not had any issues. I read other posts saying that it is best to first make sure you have the latest bios and then update or re-install drivers, when there is a problem.

Thanks

Reply 2 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

That was the first thing I did. Still freezes up.

Reply 3 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

I've got it sorted out! The most recent Dell-specific NVIDIA driver (267.21) is the cause. Factory restore, 720p works. Install 267.21 = no 720p. Reinstall original 265.94 driver = 720p.

The new NVIDIA Verde driver (270.61) resolves the problem.

Reply 4 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

how did you test your camera?

Reply 5 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

I opened up Dell Webcam Manager, went to Record Video mode, and then at the bottom is a drop-down next to the record button that lets you choose the settings, including resolution. But be warned that if it does lock up in 720p, you will have to reinstall Dell Webcam Manager to reset the resolution (though there's probably a settings file/registry entry somewhere, I didn't look) because it will default to starting up in Record Video/720p from then on.
