XPS L502 Comes with Chicklet Keyboard

Man... I got my XPS 15 L501 less than 6 months ago, and they've already changed the design slightly. The new ones have chicklet style keyboards that I'm quite fond of (I like the extra space between the keys).

Does anyone know:
  1. Can I replace the keyboard on my L501 with the new chicklet style keyboard shipping with the L502?
  2. And if so... how difficult is it? (I'm quite comfortable working on desktop PCs... not much experience breaking down laptops)

Reply 1 : XPS L502 Comes with Chicklet Keyboard

It may be possible, but I noticed some differences between the keyboard mounts and connections when taking apart both of them. The metalloid aluminum cover is also a slightly different color and may be a little different as well due to the different connections.

which warranty to upgrade to? and whats the difference?

hi, just checked the warranty upgrade for the x201 i bought, these are the options:

None 0.00

ThinkPlus ThinkPad 3 Year Onsite Repair 5x9/Next Business Day Warranty Upgrade 66.96

WAMO 4 yr carry in 68.04

WAMO 4 year courier collect 76.68

WAMO 3 year onsite repair 5x9/next business day + HDD 82.08

ThinkPad Upgrade to 3 Year Customer Carry-In Repair 110.16

ThinkPlus ThinkPad 4 Year Onsite Repair 5x9/Next Business Day Warranty Upgrade 111.24

ThinkPad Upgrade to 3 Year Courier Collect Repair 120.96

ThinkPad Upgrade to 3 Year On-Site Service Next Business Day 133.92

what is WAMO? and what is the difference between the 66 pound thinkplus warranty and the 133 pound 3 year on site service next business day?

thanks in advance

any help please?

Reply 2 : which warranty to upgrade to? and whats the difference?

Warranty and maintenance options. I wouldn't get bogged down in the wordage. There's three types of warranty - mail in, on-site and accidental coverage. They seem pretty self explanatory. If you got a used machine, accidental coverage is probably out. You need to decide whether you want depot or on-site warranty, then just the length of coverage. It's really a personal preference. I got the three year with accidental, but only because my notebook via eBay came with it. I wouldn't have paid extra for it. If you're somewhat handy, I'd opt against extending the warranty. About the only thing that would cost more than the warranty extension would be the board. The chances the board will go are small, though not zero. Plus, ThinkPads are pretty easy to take apart. If you're not too handy and want the peace of mind, then perhaps it's worth it.

P.S. - No bumps for 24 hours, per the forum rules.

Reply 3 : which warranty to upgrade to? and whats the difference?

sorry i posted it yesterday, i didnt really think about 24 hours lol, just that its a day.

i suppose since its not my primary computer i can go without the onsite service. i was just wondering why there were two types of onsite, i cant tell the difference between them, and the prices are different too.

i bought it on ebay and it came with a 3 year depot warranty (9 months already over)

Dell D620 won't recognize Fan

I've been at this for about 3 weeks now on and off. I recently received a D620 from my brother who works at help desk. The company did not need this laptop and he gave it to me.

The laptop works great until i noticed how hot it was getting (86c). I took apart the entire laptop and took notice of a fan not spinning as well as cleaning out the heatsink.

I purchased a new fan. Put her in and ...nothing. It would attempt to spin and do a slight rotation and then lock. It will repeat this the entire time the laptop is on and get extremely hot in the process.

I put the old fan back in and it didnt even attempt to spin.

I then decided to pick up a cheap mobo. I purchased a x299 mobo and put that in the laptop. Connected everything and ...once again both fans do the exact same thing. One tries to spin the other does nothing.

There is no option in the bios to turn on the fan or make it come on at certain temps. The revision is a10 for the bios.

Ive tried speedfan and that i2385395y whatever program. Both do not even see the fan. I ran a dell diagnostics and even that cannot see the fan.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the issue?

p.s. don't know whats up with formatting as i have 4 paragraphs yet they all show as double spaced sentences.

Reply 1 : Dell D620 won't recognize Fan

Is the "i2385395y" program i8kfangui? That's what I would advise you try if you haven't... but with a new fan and a new board, it's very odd that the thing still isn't working.

Can you spin both fans smoothly by hand? Maybe you just got two dud fans...

Reply 2 : Dell D620 won't recognize Fan

Yes. That is the program. (: I'm thinking that is the only viable explanation. Unfortunate for myself but whatever.

Thanks.

2510p motherboard in nc2400?

Hello,

I have an NC2400 and I think about to buy an 2510p motherboard and replace the motherboard in the NC2400. Is it possible to do it?

My basic motivation is that I hate the touchpads and I can get an 2510p mb for quite cheap. If the keyboard and other stuff would be compatible with new mb, I would do it.

Opinions?

kecsap

Reply 1 : 2510p motherboard in nc2400?

The 2510P uses a LED-backlit LCD. The NC2400 uses CCFL. This *might* mean different video cabling. Not sure.

A 2510P is pretty cheap these days on ebay and if you don't want to use the touchpad, preferring the touchstyk, then can just disable it in the Synaptics systemtray icon.

Hmm, if I can't rid of the touch pad then I would even try to buy an 2530p and try to replace the keyboard from a 2510p or nc2400 to have a trackpoint. Is it possible? I know that the trackpoint uses an own ribbon cable in the nc2400, but I do not find any disassembly guide with photos for the 2530p if it has a similar ribbon cable for the touch pad.

2530P already has a touchstyk (trackpoint). The 2510P/2530P keyboard has a ribbon cable for the keyboard and touchstyk as shown here.

A 2510P goes for $200 on ebay. A 2530P for about $100-$150 more which gets you a webcam, better looks, a faster CPU, better battery life and cooler running temps, and sata interfaces for the optical and 1.8" drives. Either system can be overclocked with my SL9400@2.64 2530P being twice faster than my previous U7600@1.6 2510P.

Excellent!!!! Thanks! I just missed the black touchstyk on the photos, because it has the same color as the keyboard! Superb, no need to do any modifications. I will target an 2530p.

T520's or T420's with 6 Gbit/s SATA??

Can you anyone confirm that the T420 and T520's have 6 Gbit/s SATA?

The new Intel chipset supports SATA III by default. There is not reason Lenovo would disable that. The new SATA III SSDs have barely reached market. The drives that are validated by Lenovo are still SATA II.

C300 ssds which are currently still the best overall ssds have been out for around 5 months now so not sure I'd call that "barely reaching the market".

Noise when reading dics on BD-C5500

It is prety loaud when there is a "talk" sceen.

I have seen some review on the net, saying that this is common.

Entering BIOS Issue

I have a 4 year old ASUS whitebox laptop.

My problem is that I can not go in BIOS using the laptop keyboard.

It will post no Keyboard Found press F1 To continue. However, It would skip that and jump into Windows.

Once I am inside windows, my Keyboard and Mouse is fine while using it.

I have tried to use an external usb keyboard and see if I can get into BIOS..

That didnt work either because it does not detect the USB keyboard.

My laptop only have USB ports, small fire wire port, VGA, and lan ports.

I also tried to press the reset button on the bottom of the laptop, didnt work also.

Any suggestion to get into BIOS?

C Series? Or any new models coming soon?

So not sure if I like the color of the bolt black, looks weird (like a pattern or something) but can't find any good pics, it doesn't look like a flat black which is what I want. Anybody own one that would have a better pic of the lid and the touch pad area?

Basically I just want a black Vaio that has usb 3.0, HDMI, and is a 15.5", are there any new models coming out this year that would have these specs? Like an update of the EB series?

Who is getting an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD?

According to this post by an OCZ forum staff member, the Vertex 3 should go on sale late next week. The 120GB and 240GB versions will be available first. They're going to be priced around $250 and $500. The speeds?

Reply 1 : Who is getting an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD?

I'll be getting a 240GB one on release day if I can. I just hope they are better than the vertex 2's in terms of reliability and bugs. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a firmware update on release day.

Reply 2 : Who is getting an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD?

come on its OCZ..

they have fouled us once before..

it wouldnt surprise me if they would do it again.

Some sites already told they got prototype drives and can not tell anything about the new vertex 3 performance with these drives.

They are waiting for the real vertex 3 and not the tuned ones.

Demo units.

yes, which are send to testers to get out best score.

not the final product.

OCZ failed for me. I would never buy from a company that screws there clients without telling. using the same name but offering less performance.

It's like buying a porsche with 300bhp.. But it only has 180bhp because porsche went for a cheaper engine.

if you complain they will tell you that it are the same engines.

After a big research someone went back to OCZ.

Now they apoligize but still dont fix the problem.

Yes they replaced 64gb chips for 32gb chips. But still the performance is 20% less then the original vertex.

So be aware that the demo drives could have much better performance then the one in the shops.

Q310 trackpad buttons broken

Hello. Both the buttons below my trackpad are now broken and only occasionally respond to clicks. Any idea how to fix this? My laptops out of warranty by now. Alternatively is it possible to do a right click using just the trackpad, like the way you can tap it to left click? Thanks.

Have a look in 'Mouse' settings in the Control Panel. Some brands of touchpad allow you to reconfigure tap options.

W701 vs 8740w - why did you buy the W701?

A question to buyers of the W701's. If you looked at the 8740w as potential competition, what made you buy the W701? Any regrets?

Reply 1 : W701 vs 8740w - why did you buy the W701?

a) better keyboard

b) 2 hdd bays

c) liked chassis layout more overall (ports, etc)

d) better speakers

e) open parts/service guides info available

f) better cooling system design

no regrets

I use to have HP nx8220 for a couple of years - it was good but not great. Then I moved to x200s - the greatest small laptop I think.

So... the W701 (note - with the embedded calibrator and tablet) was no brainer when it came to choose between Lenovo and HP

a) I doubt it. The non-backlit keyboard of 8740w is far less flexible than that of the W701. It's down to your personal likes/dislikes but the overall quality of the keyboard goes to the HP (I own one but also am a 10-years long TP user and typing this on a W510, lol). Notebookcheck is very biased towards the ThinkPads but even they rate the W701 kb as 82% vs 92-94% for the Elitebooks.

b) true, if you really need two bays.

c) very personal, I liked the 8740w ports layout more.

d) not so sure, checked both and didn't find much difference, both are mediocre at best.

e) Here I don't agree at all, there are very detailed guides available and the DIY part of the Elitebooks rocks. To replace the CPU and GPU takes less than 5 min for an average rookie.

f) How did you check that? My 8740w always stays under 85C on both CPU(840QM) and GPU(M7820 with GDDR5) under Furmark+Prime95 (ambient 26-27c). In fact, if I had the control over the fan and let it hit the max burst at 75C instead of 85C as set in the BIOS- the machine would never even reach 80C. The cooling potential is enormous, almost like in my M17X.

I like both ThinkPads and ELitebooks, but did go for the later this time around simply because I really am into good screens and the 30-IPS panel is just perfect and, IMHO is way better than even a RGB LED TN offered by Dell in M17X and M6500.

My 2 cents of course, so far no regrets on the Elitebook...

Reply 7 : W701 vs 8740w - why did you buy the W701?

if 8740w has DC2 screen, it definitely surpasses W701's one

Reply 8 : W701 vs 8740w - why did you buy the W701?

Technically, it's about 400$ more expensive than a RGB LED TN option offered by Lenovo. But yes, you're right.

Reply 9 : W701 vs 8740w - why did you buy the W701?

I have answered first question, "what made you (e.g. me) buy W701 instead of 8740w"

I believe I can judge for myself, what I deem better for myself or not.

I liked keyboard on W701 more. I dislike flat keyboard. Maybe W701's flexes somewhat, but it didn't enough to annoy me (maybe I don't press too hard when typing, not sure).

I liked speakers on W701 more. They both lack bass, but W701 speakers have better freq separation and cleaner sound.

W701 has two separate fans, for CPU and GPU. Elitebook have only one common fan. Therefore even on full CPU & GPU load temperature never went above 75 for me and fans stayed very quiet, perceivably more quiet than on HP's. That also influenced my decision.

With parts & DIY its not only down do guides. How easy to actually purchase parts is another factor for me.

I don't doubt greatness of IPS screen, however at price of 8740w equipped with it and all above personal preferences... Well, still W701 was decided for me.

Deleting a channel?

Hi,

I've recently got a 40' Samsung Series 6 and I want to know and how to delete channels that were created via the auto-store?

It has duplicate channels and I simply want to remove them as I do not like have to flicker through channels I already have defined elsewhere.

I've looked through the manual, the web and the Menu of the TV and I cannot find anything on how to do this?

Can you please help?

Thanks.

T.

Sorry for the delay, and thanks for your patience.

Keep me posted.

Hi does anybody know how to block adult channels on freeview on my samsung lcd tv. the model number is sp01.
Ive tried but cannot seem to work it out and i have just become a foster carer and would like to keep the children in my care safe.
Any help would be so greatful
Thank you.

Reply 3 : Deleting a channel?

As far as I can see at http://www.freeview.co.uk/ freeview is a hardware box, totally independent of your TV. That box lets you choose from channels, and any channel you choose is just displayed on the TV, be it a Samsung or a LG or a Sony. So blocking channels (or password protecting them) should be done via the box. How to do that should be in the freeview manuals and help stuff.

It might matter what kind of subscription you have: normal, HD, or +HD. If you can tell that, maybe one of our UK members knows more about the blocking.

Kees

Reply 4 : Deleting a channel?

Well I use Freeview myself so next time I am using it I will check the options, but I found this at Freeview's own web site;

"Does Freeview have a parental lock facility?

All programmes are broadcast without viewing restrictions. Some digital boxes and TVs have a parental lock included in their specification which will enable you to control what can be viewed. We recommend speaking to your local retailer for more information
".

http://www.freeview.co.uk/Resolutions/About-Products/General/Does-Freeview-have-a-parental-lock-facility

So it looks like it depends which digital box you have.

Panasonic W8: Upgrading RAM, Harddrive, and Operating System to Windows 7 64 bit.

Hello all! I am from slickdeals, and got in on the Panasonic W8 for $379 deal. No one has volunteered to post a "how to" thread on how to do these upgrades, though it has been discussed, so I decided to do it.

NOTE: You take responsibility for any consequences as a result of altering your computer. You are liable for your own screw ups.

This is written for someone with not much experience in changing computer components, like myself.

I'm going to break it up into several posts, and start with the simplest step:

This is really very easy. You can find information (which I will share here as well) in the manual on pages 20-21 on how to upgrade the RAM. Taking the new RAM out of the retail packaging will probably take more time than actually inserting it.

I used Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory, which I purchased on Amazon for about $30. People have reported successfully using a 4GB RAM module as well. Note that 32 bit windows operating systems can only recognize ~3.4 GB RAM, and the system comes with two, so unless you are planning on changing to a 64 bit operating system, there is no point in getting more than an additional 1 GB of RAM.

Panasonic Manual: Upgrade Memory Page 20, Inserting the RAM close up and Page 21

(I left the images huge, so hid them behind links).

Unplug your W8 from the AC adapter, close the lid, flip over the computer, and remove the battery.

Optional: Generally, I always wear my anti-static wrist band when messing with computer components. You can also just occasionally touch a grounded item (a piece of metal on the computer for instance) to discharge any static electicity, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

See the red star? That's the screw you need to remove. It kind of looks like a phillips, but it is not, use a flathead screwdriver unless you have a fancy screwdriver that has that particular shape.

Remove the screw, and flip up the cover. There's a little notch on the bottom, stick a fingernail in that and it will pull right up.

Now it will look like this:

Have you looked at the manual? DO IT BEFORE YOU PROCEED (unless you already know what you are doing, but then you shouldn't even be reading this).

I don't have pictures of this step because I only have two hands.

Line up the notch in the RAM with the protrusion in the plastic (look at everything first!), and insert at about a 30 degree angle (please look at the manual, it describes this better and has diagrams). Insert until you can no longer see the gold terminals, then slowly press it down until the tabs click into place. If you feel like you have to force it in, STOP, and make sure you have it as in as far forward as reasonably possible.

It looks like this after the tabs have popped closed.

Replace the cover and the screw, and it will look... well, exactly the same!

Recommended: verify that it was a success. Reattach the battery or the AC adapater, flip her back over, and verify that the RAM has been recognized by your computer. (Turn it on, right click on Computer/ My Computer and select properties. If you haven't yet upgraded the OS (still 32 bit Windows XP) it will show 3.40 GB RAM (with a 2+ GB RAM module).

If it doesn't show the RAM, repeat the above steps and make sure that you installed the RAM correctly, and that you are using the correct type of RAM (which is also listed in the manual).

Coming up next: Upgrading the Hard Drive!

Reply 1 : Panasonic W8: Upgrading RAM, Harddrive, and Operating System to Windows 7 64 bit.

REPLACING YOUR HARD DRIVE.

The W8 (from my deal) came with a 160 GB hard drive. I probably could have lived with it, at least for a few years, but I decided that if I was going to upgrade, I might as well do it now, rather than have to go to the trouble of saving and backing up all my data from this hard drive in a few years.

I used a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB 2.5 inch Hard Drive, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA, that I also got from Amazon. It had good reviews, and was about $55.

With hard drives, try not to touch the circuit board or the connectors (the gold areas).

Directions:

Once again, remove the AC adapter, and the battery. Pay more attention to discharging static this time around (if you aren't using the anti-static wristband), it takes longer than the RAM and it seems like it'd be easier to screw something up if you shock it. This is still not a very challenging thing to do, though.

This time, there are 6 screws to remove, but this time they are all phillips head. Before you even flip over the laptop, there are two screws to remove (by the right side, the two screws right below the screen).

Close the screen, and flip the laptop. Here are the other four screws you need to remove. Be sure to keep them in a safe place!

When you have removed all the screws, you should move the cover to the right, and then lift. If you are having a hard time removing it, be sure that you got all of the screws.

The cover from the bottom:

What it's going to look like inside:

To understand what you are looking at, there are four foam pads on the bottom, and that is a sort of black plastic bag, with the foam attached.

There is nothing holding the hard drive down, no screws or anything (I guess that's why there are 6 screws on the cover), so you can simply pick it up and flip it over. Now it'll look like this.

That cord is your sata cord, and you can see it connected to the hard drive. You can either pull the hard drive out of the padding now (you want to pull it from the side where you can see the SATA cord attached, because it is the only way to get it out) or you can detach the SATA cord and then remove the hard drive from the padding.

Disconnecting the cord is not difficult, just gently wiggle and pull the connector from the hard drive. Then attach the new hard drive.

Now, slide (gently!) the new hard drive into the foam jacket. Pay attention to the orientation

the thinner foam padding (on top right now) should have the metal shielded section of the hard drive against it. This is so the cord is not bent oddly when it is put back in place. No need to stress the cord.

Once you have it all the way back in

Go ahead and flip it back over (look and make sure the cord is laying nice and flat)

Get everything back the way it was

And put the cover back on.

You'll have to push it down and over, and probably hold it down while you put in the first few screws.

By the way, the two longer screws go on the top, there are 3 short screws, and the screw with a thicker "top" section goes in the little leg on the bottom.

Now, you'll either need to reinstall the operating system on your new hard-drive, or install a new one.

Next: Installing an Operating System!

Reply 2 : Panasonic W8: Upgrading RAM, Harddrive, and Operating System to Windows 7 64 bit.

This was the part that caused me the most problems, simply because I'm not a "computer nerd" and don't have a lot of experience with this aspect of things.

First, if you are installing an "Upgrade" version of Windows 7 (as I was) you will have to reinstall Windows XP from the recovery disk included with your computer. Yes, it'll take about 30 minutes, but I don't know of a way around it.

First, however, you have to be able to put the disk in, and read it!

So, you have everything screwed back together, and everything looks hunky dory? Go ahead and reattach the battery/ AC adapter, flip your computer back over, and turn it out.

Now, hit the F2 button when it starts booting up. Keep hitting it, there is a notification on the bottom that will tell you to hit F2 for setup, and that is what you need.

You'll start out on this screen.

See the tabs on top? You need to go over to the "Main" tab, and change Optical Drive Power to "On" (it defaults to Off).

Now go over to the "Advanced" tab, and turn Optical Drive to Enabled.

You can play with the Boot order if you want, but you don't need to. Go over to the Exit tab, and hit Save Values and Reboot.

Once it reboots, you will be able to open up the optical drive and insert the operating system CD (either one of the Windows XP or Windows Vista cds that came with the laptop, or if you have a full install of another operating system, you could install it now with the optical drive.

It will then boot from the CD and install the OS. Follow the directions.

So, once you have XP installed, if you want to go to 64 bit Windows 7, you will need to reboot again. You will need to install it going from the F2/ Setup menu again, so once again, when prompted, hit F2.

Go over to the Boot tab. This is the order it will look for boot information from, normally floppy drive is first.

Change the order so Optical Drive is listed before Hard Drive. (sorry, I didn't take pictures of this). Put your Windows 7 64 bit CD in now, if you haven't already.

Go to the Exit tab and Save and Reboot again.

Now Windows 7 will start to install. Follow the prompts.

The install generally goes very well. Windows 7 will not find a few drivers, though (most noticably the touch pad driver that allows for the circular scrolling).

I'm going to address how to do that in the next post, because I need a break!

Reply 3 : Panasonic W8: Upgrading RAM, Harddrive, and Operating System to Windows 7 64 bit.

This website will be your friend. Use it often.

Toughbook drivers

First, don't be dumb like I was at first. Follow the installation instructions, it is a PDF file that will tell you what to install first. It will make your life much easier. It also will tell you how to install them.

Do a search in the website provided for "f9" in the text box. For step 1 (required) hit "All Drivers". You can also narrow it down to your operating system (in my case, Windows 7 64 bit) in step 4.

Do the search, and one of the first things that come up is installation instructions.

So, first you need the OS INF driver installed. Search for "OS INF f9" and the file that comes up should be the one you need (double check the file name in the Installation Instructions).

Note that the installation instructions also tell you how to install it (in this case, by running setup.exe) and where the file is unpacked (you can copy and paste this into a windows address bar to be taken to the location).

Lather, rinse, and repeat for the utilities listed in the Installation Instructions.

(If anything, it is even more tedious typing this out then it is doing it, so please just follow the directions as given in the installation instructions, and you will be fine).

Note: the Sound Driver would not install for me, but the sound works fine.

To regain the touch pad circular scrolling (after you have done the steps listed in the installation instructions!), change "All Drivers" in Step 1 to Keyboard, Mouse and Peripherals, and download the wheel pad utility and the touch pad driver. (First two that come up on the list when you search for f9).

At this point, there should be no unidentified devices left in device manager, and everything should be working better than new!

Good luck!

Excellent, thank you!

Reply 6 : Panasonic W8: Upgrading RAM, Harddrive, and Operating System to Windows 7 64 bit.

I take it that the 623MB zip file of W8 Win7 drivers on the Panasonic driver search page is essentially useless?

Reply 7 : Panasonic W8: Upgrading RAM, Harddrive, and Operating System to Windows 7 64 bit.

I've been wondering that as well. On one hand some people are saying that Win 7 64bit is easier to install since people have found all the right drivers. On the other hand Panasonic supports Win7 32 for this machine. It's not clear which is really better for me assuming you want to stick with the stock 2gb configuration. I don't need to upgrade mine. I have a more powerful 15" laptop for those times.

Just curious... a couple of times now I've seen one of the veteran members post "rep to you" -- I assume meaning awarding one of the "rep" power points in appreciation for a very useful post. But the posters "rep" total remains the same, as in this case where it is still at zero. Am I wrong about what is happening, or is there some missing step?

It takes so many Reputation/Feedback from members to get a green block and I am not sure how many. You have 1 green block.....check and see how many members left you Reputation/Feedback .This would be a good question for Alex.

Guide to installing W7(64) on Vaio VGN Z

For those still struggling to get W7 (64) working on the Z, here is my brief guide. I documented everything I did while I was installing and I've provided links to the sites I obtained the drivers from.

My install works completely with mostly the latest W7 drivers installed. Although I state an order here, I expect other orders would work but certainly orders seems to be fairly important.

I'd appreciate if even the experienced would glance this as I've a few questions of my own at the bottom.

My model is a Z11, which is a first generation Z. This is equivalent to the Z590 USA model. There are a few differences, primarily the Z11VN comes with an Option integrated mobile broadband card.

I left UAC default. I installed all drivers by right clicking and choosing install as administrator, but this is probably unnecessary. If a driver asked for a restart, I did one. Windows update installed quite a bit by default including the firmware parser. I left these alone as no update was required.

- Upgrade to latest BIOS (R2170M3)

- Ensure all integrated components are switched on in currently installed OS

- Put switch into speed mode

- Clean install of Z with W7, 64 Bit

- Allowed all Windows Update updates to install, which required a few restarts

- Installed GFX driver and restarted (NVDVID-00208041-764.exe)

- Sony Shared Library 5.4 (Sony_Shared_Library_5.4_5.4.0.05200.zip)

- Restarted and changed to STAMINA mode

- Vaio Event Service 5.0 (VAIO_Event_Service_5.0_5.0.0.07010.zip)

- Restarted and changed back to SPEED

- Vaio Smart Network 3.0 (VAIO_Smart_Network_3.0_3.0.0.09080.zip)

- WWAN drivers from option website. Had to input my IMEI to get the download (153_Driver-4_0_17_0-Installer.zip) - I used the installer in TCPSCHEMA0/Without service folder.

- Vaio control centre 4.0 (VAIO_Control_Center_4.0_4.0.0.06120.zip)

- Setting utility series 5.0 (Setting_Utility_Series_5.0_5.0.0.07300.zip)

- Finger print software (7UPG_PROTECTOR_SUITE_QL_UPEK_64 5.9_5.9.2.5739.ZIP)

- Alps touch pad driver (POINTING_DRIVER_ALPS_7.102A_64_7.102.505.201.ZIP)

- Vaio power management 4.0 (VAIO_Power_Management_4.0_4.0.0.08240.zip)

- Memory stick reader driver (MEMORY_CARD_READER_WRITER_DRIVER_RICOH_MS_6.3X64_I_6.3.0.61.ZIP)

- Memory card reader driver (MEMORY_CARD_READER_WRITER_DRIVER_RICOH_SD_6.3X64_K_6.3.2.28.ZIP)

Everything works that I've tried:

- Brightness in SPEED and STAMINA

- Volume in both modes

- S1 and S2

- Eject

- Memory card slot and memory stick

- Web camera

- Setting utility is fully populated including functioning HDD protection

- I've not tested HDMI

Some observations

-------------------

I tried a newer version (POINTING_DRIVER_ALPS_7.202B_64_7.202.505.108.ZIP)of the touch pad driver and it supported scrolling by circular gestures on the touch pad. It worked really well but it caused the mouse cursors to stop animating. For example the busy win 7 cursor would not rotate. I couldn't find a way to have the gestures and animated cursors.

I like the newer version of the smart network software that bases itself in the notification area, instead of the top of the screen. One quirk is that Wireless WAN is always turned on after a reboot. Previously, Smart Network respected the state it was in prior to a reboot (like it still does with wifi and bluetooth).

If any of you have circular gestures AND animated cursors I'd like to know how.

If any of you have the new Smart Network software (V3+) and it does not always turn WWAN on after a reboot, I'd like to know how

Hope this helps some of you.

How do the sony power management utilities compare to the built in win7 ones?

My Z has a blu-ray...I'm wondering what I need to install to get that to work fine.

They're certainly not essential, but they do allow you to automatically power down the optical drive and other feature automatically. There is also balance, performance and silent modes, though I'm not sure if they come with the power management or one of the other utilities. I don't see that they replace the windows 7 power management features, they just add some extras.

I have read that they can have a negative impact on the battery life, but I've not seen any evidence to substantiate this.

I only have the DVD drive, so I can't say from first hand experience but I'm virtually certain no specific drivers are required. You may need extra software to be able to play movies.

Thx sigma957 for this guide.

I've got the Z11VN/B (german model). I want to install a windows 7 professional 64bit version.

Is there any chance to reinstall the preinstalled software Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Roxio Easy Media Creator?

Thank you sigma957. This looks like the ultimate guide. I'm planning to install Win7 x64 on my Z90US (Japanese equivalent to yours), so this thread is very helpful +rep

Thanks coolguy. I used the registry fudge in the thread you provided and it did the trick. I've now got circular gestures and spinning cursors - bliss

I've not been in a rush to reinstall that software as I have alternatives I'm happy with. I think you can re-install them from the recovery DVD though. You'd first need to create the DVDs from the factory installed vista. I'm pretty sure you can then use the DVDs to re-install the 3rd party software. I don't know this for sure though as I've not tried it.

Reply 8 : Guide to installing W7(64) on Vaio VGN Z

I've already tried installing the 3rd party software from the recovery DVDs, but it quit with an error.

I thought it is a problem installing 32bit software on an 64bit OS.

Oh, that's a shame. I would think your thoughts about 32/64 bit software are probably right. Sorry, I have no other suggestions.

Anyone else...
