CF-27 Hard drive upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my cf-27 HD from the 6gb that is installed to a 60gb. Can anyone give me any sites or companies that carry these? Have not had any luck yet searching the engines. Thanks

Reply 1 : CF-27 Hard drive upgrade

the drives are standard 2.5 inch IDE (PATA) hardrives.

there is nothing special about them. i dunno where you live, so i cant give you any good sites. but check the local computer store.

Reply 2 : CF-27 Hard drive upgrade

You can put any 2.5 inch pata laptop drive in it you want however if the drive is larger than 127 GB you will have to partition the drive with partitions less than 127 GB for it to be usable.

Indeed. Thanks for pointing that out. Neglected to inform the OP of that.

CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I restore the notebook with the restore disc from Panasonic and the touch screen doesn't. I was wondering if there is a broken fuses or bad sensor board.

How can I run diagnostics on the touch screen?

Thanks in Advances

Mee

Reply 1 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

This has all been said before.

Do this:

1. F2 into bios make sure Touch Screen is enabled.

2. Page over and set to defaults. [F10]

Provide your full model number. From first screen in bios.

Use this search engine for a LOT more information. Replace TEST with CF-18 FAQ for instance.

TEST site:forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic - Google Search

Reply 2 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

The touch screen is enabled in BIOs and its set to defaults. It still doesn't work. Here is the full model number: CF-18NHH2XBM

Reply 3 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

Did the touchscreen ever work?

Reply 4 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

yes it was working before the reload.

Reply 5 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I had a Cf 29 that the Touchscreen worked until I reloaded windows. The calibration was erased during the install and I could not recalibrate it. It turned out to be a hardware failure of the touchscreen.

Reply 6 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

Okay, did you end up replacing the screen then? By the way you have any step to prevent this from happen again if reload is needed?

Reply 7 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I repaired the screen. Same outcome as if I replaced the screen. With a good screen the reload will not cause a problem. After the screen replacement/repair, I reloaded WinXP twice with no problem.

Reply 8 : CF-18 Touch Screen not working

I "fixed" a TS the other day by unplugging and re-seating two plugs. In the TSPCB in the screen. I'm not sure which one was the culprit but suspect the ribbon tape from the Touch Panel. I was careful to not pull on the ribbon tape so as not to disturb the ribbon where it goes into the TS panel. I first removed and re-set the connector under the keyboard but this didn't help.

Which CPU fan model for HP s5310y slimline desktop?

I have a very noisy tic-tic-tic noise coming from one of my CPU fans. I cleaned the dust but see that the fan appears to be defective, as it's sliding horizontally out of place somewhat. In fact, if I tilt my machine and allow gravity to work its magic, the fan slides to where it should be rotating and the noise stops. Therefore, I think I need to replace the fan. The machine is less than a year old and works really well besides this one flaw.

Can someone tell me which model of CPU fan I need and where I can buy it online? I'm not much of a tech gal, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Reply 1 : Which CPU fan model for HP s5310y slimline desktop?

But I will write how I replace such fans.

I pull the fan out and note if it's some 3 pin or 4 pin connection. Then I look at newegg.com, geeks.com for something close. Then I get out my ruler to measure my fan and compare it to the units I found. One last step is to see if the Voltage is the same (within a volt is fine for fans.)

Hope this helps,
Bob

Reply 2 : Which CPU fan model for HP s5310y slimline desktop?

Thanks, Bob; I will give that a shot when I am ready to replace.

From other research I've done online, I've also determined that based on my processor (AMD Athlon II x 2 250), I'll need a "socket AM3" and some thermal grease to allow for some heat transference.

Best,
Chrissy

The case fan is retained by a screw and a metal clip, Try reseating the fan, noticing how it just clips in, and is held by the single screw. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01949721.pdf

Momentus XT Firmware Update

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but SD25 Firmware has been released by Seagate. This would apply to you if you have the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid drive(s) in your laptop.

I looked for a change log and couldn't find one. I installed the update on my G73JH via the Windows Installer. It worked perfectly. Please note that my machine did not come with this drive. I purchased one about a year later so mine is a retail version although I'm not aware of any difference between the OEM and retail drives.

Reply 1 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

Updated to sd25 aswell, sometime last week, but I cannot see any difference between sd25 and sd24.

Make sure to turn the hdds to IDE in bios before updating, otherwise it will not work.

Reply 2 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

Thanks. I don't have an XT in my G73 but I do have one in my nVidia ION netbook. Can't tell any differences either but still nice to have the latest.

Not sure why but I left my drives on AHCI and it flashed the new firmware just fine. Didn't see the warning to switch it in time but all went just fine for me... on the netbook.

Reply 3 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

AHCI mode will flash fine. Only RAID fails to work when flashing firmware (even if that drive is not part of a RAID array)

thx 4 news

Reply 5 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

Thanks for the post I will try to install it tonight.

It's being 2 months that I have this drive installed and didn't have any issue for now.

@Jody: just flashed the SW lappy to SD25. Pretty straight-forward using the Windows Installer.

I wish I knew what it fixes. I wasn't having any problems with the drive so I haven't noticed an improvement per se. The drive makes a machine boot pretty quickly but then everything from there on out seems to run at the same speed to me. If you launch a program a couple of times it will launch quickly until you reboot. I could see it being much handier on a machine that stays running for long periods of time. I shut mine down and take it to work every day so it never really builds up a useful cache other than bootup files.

Reply 8 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

I know one thing it fixes... it will update OEM Seagate drives without needing to do a force update, unlike SD24's installer.

Reply 9 : ST95005620AS Momentus XT SD25 Available

True lol.

Anyway, for me it didnt install the firmware in AHCI mode, that's why I mentioned about switching to IDE earlier.

T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

I wanna (finally) replace my 7 year old X40 and the 2 contenders at the moment are the T420 or the X220. Based on the option for a 1600x900 screen on the T420 I'm leaning towards the T420, the X220 would only mean a change from 1024x768 to 1366x768 and I would love some extra vertical space.

To be honest, I was on the verge of ordering a T420, but when the first reviews came out.. mediocre screen quality for a $1500+ laptop? The poor screen quality of the T420 being my only reason not to order it,

I would really like some honest, first hand opinions. If possible, could T420 owners compare the screen in real life usage (browser, text-editor, youtube, photo editing, watching DVD etc.) to other laptops they own(ed)?

(I'm assuming by the way T420 and T420s screens are the same)

Some quotes:

"Display Colors : Though it would be manageable to watch movies with this color reproduction, the experience might not be enjoyable for visually acute users. The coverage of color spectrum is below average, making colors look far from authentic and incomparable to real life experience"

"Contrast : This contrast can be simply described as bad. Black areas resemble a shade of dark gray, and whites look dirty"

"Viewing Angle : Looking at the screen from the side causes color distortions"

Source: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 NW183GEReview

"The matte screen has m maximum brightness of 200 cd /. The contrast is also very low. At maximum brightness, the ratio of 158:1, which is unacceptable for a device of this price range"

Translated with Google, source: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 NW4NGGE im Test Halbwchsiger Office-Star auf notebookjournal.de

"I was so disheartened to see how bad the T420 display is. The viewing angles are terrible. Tilt the lid so that the bottom part of the screen is focused and the top part of the screen becomes a blurred washed out mess. Images are so washed out that they almost appear black and white"

Source: forum.thinkpads.com • View topic - T420 display among the worst I've ever seen :-(

"1600x900 16:9 250 nits, 300:1, fairly narrow viewing angle, particularly vertical direction. Tt seems the pixels are not very tight, sometimes look 'grid-dy'"

hmm. Well I wish I'd seen these before I put in my order for a T420s.

Two different users share their opinion of the T420 screen quality in the first page of this thread.

When I ordered my 14.1 Widescreen 1440x900 T61, the number one complaint was screen quality. However, when I checked out similarly priced laptops available locally, I discovered that they had the same screen quality issues - the glossy screens just made them less noticeable. So I decided it was an acceptable risk, and the screen has worked fine for my purposes.

Hope this helps.

Reply 5 : T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

I guess I'll find out when my T420 arrives, though estimated ship date is not until 4/26.

When that happens, I'll be happy to compare my T400's WXGA+ display, the T420 HD+ 1600x900, and any similar Dell systems I have at work (I may have an E6410 I can locate) and let people know. It will be somewhat subjective, but I'll do what I can.

I will say I'd rather have more screen real estate from top-to-bottom than on the sides. I think most of us business-class users would rather be able to see more of a web page or a document than be able to match movie resolutions. I wish I could still choose 16:10.

Reply 6 : T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

I think the 1600x900 screen on the T420s is fine. Stellar? No way. But it's a normal business class 250 nit screen. I could certainly use it as my day-to-day machine.

It really depends on the app mix.

Reply 7 : T420 Screen quality acceptable or not?

Seems many 14' could have been fiited with better screens. For the price and in these days, 'acceptable' or 'good enough' is imo not good enough, Knowing the 510520 screens are far superior in many areas, what could be the problem in using a 14' variant of these 15' screens. Whatever the reason, had a 420 order ready to go (NW182MN) + xtra 9cell, in stock & 2 days delivery, but stopped when coming across the screen tests Otherwise, it looked like the perfect investment. Back to the drawing board for now.

Some screen tests comparisions listed in T420 T520 reviews: screen differences.

I'm in the exact same situation, replacing an X40 and wanting a higher vertical resolution (and, preferably, not too much lower physical screen height). I finally decided on the T420 (delivery next week ), after having seen the entire new Thinkpad lineup and my old X40 next to each other at Lenovo's offices here in Stockholm.

In short, if you're used to the X40's screen, the one of the T420 is nothing but an improvement. It's as good or better in all regards. It's also far behind a modern, bright IPS screen. But at least for me, that doesn't matter. I'm used to the X40 (and the T61, which I had at work until recently), and the T420 has a screen that is at least as good as those.

In other words, my guess is you won't be disappointed, as long as you're not expecting a miracle.

Thanks, just the kind of info I was hoping for. Guess like many others I'm trying to compare the T420 screen to the o so perfect (according to the reviewers) X220 IPS panel. Thanks to clever marketing I suddenly seem to need a laptop with USB3.0, IPS panel, 1TB SSD, 25 hours of battery life and 1920x1080 resolution on a 11.6" screen

You are right, anything I buy now will be a big improvement over my current laptop, even if it would be a T400 or X200.

And about expecting a miracle, well, would like to see a Dutch shop that sells a T420 at US prices..

(Congratulations on your T420, would love some T420/X40 side by side pictures)

everything can be replaced. chipset and gpu need to be resoldered using infrared soldering agreagate (7000$, not every repair shop has it)

how do I do it?? with infrared soldering ??

you can't do it on your own. only repair service. and they will take 100-250$ for that.

oh... ok thank you

Reply 5 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

negotiate with them. 100$ is good price for them for 5-10 minutes work. You can disassembly laptop and bring a motherboard only with chipset to even lower the prise but how will you guarantee that it worked before if they spoil smth? And make sure they will use Infrared Soldering Station not a hot air one which is more risky

do you think 230$ is a good price?(work + warranty plus the chipset)

Reply 7 : Can I replace my old nVidia chipset with a new one(same model) for GX600X?

warranty is what must be no matter what. This price includes search of the chipset, buying it and disassembling reassembling laptop. Still I think 200$ would be a limit for that. If you buy chipset your self it must reduce 70-50$. It depends if they are rednecks there or good trusted guys

I think your laptop uses MXM cards....

You could just buy something newer/better for about 100$

I'm using the webcam at 720p and have not had any issues. I read other posts saying that it is best to first make sure you have the latest bios and then update or re-install drivers, when there is a problem.

Thanks

Reply 2 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

That was the first thing I did. Still freezes up.

Reply 3 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

I've got it sorted out! The most recent Dell-specific NVIDIA driver (267.21) is the cause. Factory restore, 720p works. Install 267.21 = no 720p. Reinstall original 265.94 driver = 720p.

The new NVIDIA Verde driver (270.61) resolves the problem.

Reply 4 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

how did you test your camera?

Reply 5 : 720p Webcam doesn't work at 720p

I opened up Dell Webcam Manager, went to Record Video mode, and then at the bottom is a drop-down next to the record button that lets you choose the settings, including resolution. But be warned that if it does lock up in 720p, you will have to reinstall Dell Webcam Manager to reset the resolution (though there's probably a settings file/registry entry somewhere, I didn't look) because it will default to starting up in Record Video/720p from then on.

G73 not showing boot drive

My G73JH crashed earlier today and now it can't seem to find the boot HDD

If I try to boot I get this message:

"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

When I go to the setup utility it shows one 500Gb HDD in boot position 1 and the DVD in boot position 2 but if I go see the boot options and the SATA configuration it only shows the DVD in sata port 1 and the HDD on port 4. There is no trace of the other HDD and all the other ports are empty.

Starting to freak out a little here.

It came as a surprise. I was scanning something from a USB scanner and while the data was transfering, I got impatient and moved a 1Mb file from one folder to another at the same time. Crash of the century, everything froze, it has been refusing to boot since then. I downloaded the Win7 DVD from ALLurGroceries's link and tried it with a USB boot drive but all I got was a flashing white underscore on a black screen. I'm trying another boot at the moment. I'll probably check for a new drive online this weekend if I'm still not booting.

My G73JH has been virtually trouble free since I got it back in June 2010.... until today.

Reply 4 : G73 not showing boot drive

Hm if you're getting a flashing underscore it probably isn't set up right... maybe try it on a different computer to see if you can at least boot the windows 7 installer. If not try again, or just burn a DVD.

The 2nd attempt worked. It's booting Win7 Installer via the USB drive.

I ran the Startup Repairs (which didn't see my windows partition) but when trying to boot without the USB drive the computer still gives me the same error message. If I tried to load drivers manually while in the Startup Repair my C drive is missing completly and my second HDD has become the C drive which seams to point to a dead HDD.

This is the Startup Repair log:

Root cause found

This partition table does not have a valid system partition

repair action: partition table repair

result: completed successfully, error code = 0x0

time taken: 1451ms

I ran the Startup Repair 3 times and the log is the same every time, which makes sens since there is no WIndows installed on what is now considered the C drive.

Sata port working fine.

It's starting more and more to look like a fried HDD.

Weird thing... Both HDD are identical but they are not the same color. One is dark blue and the other is more greenish.... same part number though so probably nothing.

Buying an XPS15

Hi guys, I'm planing on ordering an XPS15, seems likes the best value for a 15" notebook, and had a few questions.

Is the upgrade from the 525m 1gb to the 540m 2gb worth the extra $100? I've heard there's debate about whether the extra gb of vram makes much difference. I'd like to be able to play games like oblivion and black ops.

Also wondering about the soundblaster x-fi upgrade. I wasn't impressed with what ever soundblaster software upgrade i got with my inspiron 9400. I this one worth while? Some more info on it would be awesome.

I know in the past there were some pretty great coupons, do they still have that? I was pricing out a system last night ($999 base price with $444 discount) and it had a 2% epp discount too, which is no longer there today.

Any advice on scoring the best deal possible? Does being a student make any difference?

Thanks!

Reply 2 : Buying an XPS15

I own the XPS 15 with 540M card and its not super impressive for a mid range card.

Personally I have used it fine with some minor glitches causing the system to freeze up playing online games (adjusting the GPU speed via nividia control panel is required for me based on what game I play).

From what I have read over last 3 months on various posts on this form and others people who have tested the 525M card show you can actually very safely overclock it to match the performance of the 540M and it will run pretty stable. Where as my experience with overclocking the 540M has personally given me alot of system lock up/freezes when doing this.

The physical memory boost of 2GB and 1GB is where most people are very upset with the 540M performance. Most games/programs will never use that extra 1GB if it needs more as most good games do it usually spends anything over 1.1-1.5gb requests to your shared system RAM so yeah not that usefull for $100.00 extra cost.

(I have not tested that last statement myself but numerous forum posts tesing the cards with GPU monitoring programs explain this ram usage issue on the video cards using this type of GPU)

I would not recommend it unless its part of a nice package deal that requires this video card to be included.

Reply 3 : Buying an XPS15

The 525M can overclock to 540M speeds most of the time, and most games don't need the increase in video memory.

Save the extra $100 to upgrade to the B+RGLED 1920x1080 screen, or to start with a base-config that already includes the 1920x1080 screen. This is the most important upgrade, because the quality of the B+RGLED screen is amazing compared to the 720p, and the higher resolution and realestate makes daily usage of the computer a lot more efficient because you can fit more than one window on the screen. Although running games in native res on the higher resolution screen will result in a performance decrease, you can always run in 1280x720. In my opinion I'd much rather go with a much better screen that greatly increases the usability and quality of the computer, rather than make a tree in Crysis look better.

In my opinion I'd much rather go with a much better screen that greatly increases the usability and quality of the computer, rather than make a tree in Crysis look better.

My 525M runs at 550M speeds easily. 740Mhz and 990Mhz Memory (up from 600/900). I use Nvidia Inspector for the overclock.

Reply 5 : Buying an XPS15

Thanks guys, that clears a lot up.

Any thoughts on how to get the best deal? Stacking coupons? Calling and haggling?

Reply 6 : Buying an XPS15

I think the best way is to find the best deal online, then make it better over the phone... Assuming you are in the states

First, go here

XPS 15 - Intel Core i7 Laptop for High-Octane Entertainment | Dell

Select the one in the middle. This one has 400 in discounts off the top and most of the key upgrades (i7, 1080p display 750 GB hard drive, bluetooth).

Assuming you like it as is, add to cart.

Use coupon 932N$0ZCCHWZB9 for $70 off.

Use coupon HLSKSR06S9ZG0F for free shipping.

At this point, you are at 930 + tax for the XPS.

Next step. During your return period, cancel the 2 year extended warranty. Based on the feedback I've seen, some have cancelled and gotten $175 back (and still have limited 1 yr warranty). Some have been offered 100 back to keep it.

If all goes well, you could be at 755 + tax for the computer pretty well equipped.

I'm pretty excited though. I am in process of doing the same thing (computer arrives tomorrow). I added the 540 card and a backlit keyboard. What is a little upsetting is that when I ordered the computer, they gave the 640 GB drive at the same price that they sell it with the 750 but that is a phone call to resolve.

Reply 7 : Buying an XPS15

Thanks for the tip!

does dell.com not ship outside of the US? I'm in Canada, and I'm pretty sure I ordered my last dell from the states, they have much better prices than dell.ca

Samsung LN52A580 NO POWER

Purchased tv 18 months ago. Had problems with the on and off power cycle. Samsung sent reairman,(3 weeks we waited) replaced capacitor board did not fix problem, sent repairman, (2 weeks we waited) replaced main board fixed problem. 3 months later we are watching tv it went black but we could hear the audio, tried to turn tv off and it just died. There is nothing - no red light just nothing! Of course it is no longer under warranty. We have checked and all the capacitors look fine. What do we need to try? What an ordeal for a $1900 tv. Thanks for any help.

sony vaio sb battery

anyone try to take out the battery before? the user manual advise us not to take out the battery when ON the notebook as it will cause the notebook malfunction...

i got use the sony vaio battery care function and set charge until 80% only but i think better take out battery for long lasting...

Reply 1 : sony vaio sb battery

I wouldnt do it. The battery is the last line of defense against power surges, data loss and so forth.

Where the battery is located it should have no problems with heat.

Reply 2 : sony vaio sb battery

Batteries in modern notebooks don't suffer as much battery deterioration as they did in the past. That's because the notebook will stop the AC power from charging when it reaches 100%, so it makes no difference having the battery inside the computer or not.

The real bummer that degrades batteries is the heat produced from the vents. Unless you're planning to do a long gaming run of >30 minutes, then having the battery there won't hurt it. I don't even know if removing the battery is an option on the SB (by the looks of it, it's soldered in, and you can see the position of it in the instruction manual).

Reply 3 : sony vaio sb battery

Wrong. It's not soldered in.

Reply 4 : sony vaio sb battery

battery is entirely removable, I took it out yesterday

Reply 5 : sony vaio sb battery

Well apologies for that. I couldn't find the mechanism used to remove the battery (is it one of the two latches on the bottom?)

Reply 6 : sony vaio sb battery

I don't quite understand your question but the battery is under that panel that you have to unscrew. The RAM and SSD/HDD are also housed under the same [gigantic] cover on the bottom of the notebook.

Reply 7 : sony vaio sb battery

he is confusing the dock and slice battery connector as latchess

Reply 8 : sony vaio sb battery

i tried to open the bottom cover but the screw is quite unique and small. quite difficult to open coz too hard and worry it will break my lcd screen if it press and unscrew very hard...

can anyone tell me what size and type of screw driver to open the bottom cover?

iPod Touch Unable to Connect to Internet via Ad Hoc in Vista

(I know this seems vague but I'll list my system/software specs below)

I can't figure out what's going wrong here. I can create a wireless Ad Hoc network that works fine for stuff like using my iPod as a wireless mouse, but I can't get on the internet via ICS, even though I've gone in to both my internet connection & the Ad Hoc itself, enabled ICS in the sharing tab & made sure that my ip's were all auto instead of static in IP4 & IP6.

I thought it might be a firewall thing but as far as I can tell I've configured it right.

Could it be my internet serivce provider or something?

Here are my vitals:

Here I use a similar setup but used ICS. Then I hooked the ethernet port to a wifi router.

Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

After i expanded the volume image that i had created with secretzone (its size was about 300GB and i added 10GB) i cannot mount it succesfully. The virtual drive always appears in Windows Explorer when i try to mount the volume, however its status in secretzone remains "not mounted" (only the letter of the virtual drive appears). The first time i tried to enter it after the expansion, i did it successfully and the problem started the moment i double-clicked on the folder where i kept all my files. I got an error message and Windows Explorer (Windows vista) was shut down. Now i cannot enter the volume at all and everytime i double-click on the virtual drive i get an error message that the file or volume is destroyed and cannot be read. According to the Samsung manuals, "expanding the volume image does not affect the existing data" and there is no warning about something that can go wrong. The physical hard drive is of course accessible. There was nore than 300GB free space when i did the expansion and i guess i can delete the volume image and regain its space. Is there a way however to recover any of that data. I would appreciate any help on this... Thank you!

Reply 1 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

cyan0,

First, what's secretzone?
Second, what were you trying to do?

--HDTech

Reply 2 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

Thanks for your reply! Secretzone is a program provided by samsung that creates partitions to a disk that can be encrypted (password protected volume images that are mounted to a virtual drive after entering the password). The same program can expand a partition/volume image, that is adding more bytes to it after it was initially created... and that was what i tried to do. As i wrote at my first post according to the Samsung manuals, "expanding the volume image does not affect the existing data". However i cannot access the volume image after i expanded it. It was somehow damaged by the expansion procedure which is supposedly safe. Is there a way to recover any of the data that were stored in that partition or fix the problem entirely? Thanks again for your help!

Reply 3 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

cyan0,

Try, with a paper clip, pressing the RESET button, which is located to the right of the >> button. While it shouldn't affect the files you have on there already, it might. But that may reset the player, at least for you to try again.

Keep me posted.

Hi there,
I have the same problem cyan0 reported.
after expand the secret zone from 100Gb to 200Gb, (the process took a long time and ended ok) I cannot access to this partition anymore. Downloaded lastest versions and tried with different computers with no success...

I guess if someone at Samsung has noticed this problem...

any solution?

Reply 6 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

Hi!

I have the same problem on my Samsung G2 external drive, but the difference is that when I tried expanding the volume image size the process didn't complete right. I could access the partition right after that, but when I unplugged the hard drive and tried to mount the image later, it cannot be mounted. The image icon is visible, but when I try to access it I get a message tht the fie is corrupt and unreadable, while it is still listed as unmounted on SecretZone software. Any known solutions for this?

Thanks

Reply 7 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

While i was searching for an answer to this problem, i have come across tot his discussion topic. I had a 650 GB secret zone in my Samsung Story 3.0 external hard disk. I have calculated the free space and i tried to expand it to 1.3 TB and after taking hours it has given an error message and the expansion could not be completed. But the previous secret zone partition remained the same and i can still see that 650 GB part. Although i enter the right password now my secret zone partition vould not be mounted and it is impossible to reach my data! Now i am trying some data recovery softwares but i am not hopeful. I will inform if any of those softwares work. I hope a tech from samsung can help us otherwise i won't buy any samsung product from now on. Let's inform each other if any of us can find a solution for this.

Bob

Reply 11 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

Thanks for the link, i will check it... Samsung only offers some of their partner recovery sites which don't give any service in my country. Actually i know that most recovery services are too expensive that i'd rather give up. I have mailed them twice but they just don't help about recovery, i lost my data because of their crap software. I am sure they added this software without testing it before. If it has been tested we wouldn't suffer the same data loss problem here. From now on i will not buy any kind of Samsung products anymore. There is no help, no support, they don't even know what kind of problems they cause. Do i have to pay thousands of dollars for data recovery just because of their fault? I think those guys should feel more responsible when producing something. We are paying money for their products in order to keep our data safe, not for losing them!

Reply 12 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

But no HDD maker today will offer data recovery services for free even if you prove their software had a fault. For decades we are told to backup what we can't lose yet the message is often lost or folk think that these externals are "storage."

Top it off with software to lock up content (folderlock, drive locker and more) and you see the recipe for disasters. This is why my files are on many drives, and the ones I can't lose are on DVD. And then I have a pair of USB keys to hold yet another copy of the few things I absolutely can't lose. One of those keys is in a safe place in a zip lock bag with desiccant.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Next time, keep a backup copy.

Hi cyan0
the exact same thing happened to me this morning. Please if you find a solution please let me know.
Do you know how can i at least retrieve the disk space without reformatting the disc?

Reply 14 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

I have tried to expand my volume image from 400 to 500 Gb. I have noticed that after the expansion the .msr file shown in the secretzone list is still 400Gb, but the file size shown in windows file explorer is 411Gb. Does any of you Samsung people have any hints regarding this problem? Is there a way to recover our data or should we consider them lost forever?
we would appreciate an answer.

Reply 15 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

I have downloaded all possible data recovery softwares and i am running them on my hard disk at the moment. Just because my external disk has a 1.5 TB capacity the softwares are running too slow and taking approximately 24 hours. I think it will take more time, at least 2 weeks trying to rescue the data in different ways with all of those available softwares. If i can find a way and the right software which does the job, i will share my experience with all of you guys here. Also keep trying to find a solution and share your experiences.

Reply 16 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

I have found out that lots of data recovery softwares can make it possible to save the '(file name.msr)' to another partition. I have scanned the whole disk with Active@ File Recovery spending 24 hours and it can make it possible to save the image file itself. The file recovery softwares don't show the contents inside the image
file but they just make it possible to save the image file itself. However i don't have enough free space to save this image file so i couldn't make it possible to check whether it is possible to extract the contents from the image file. The question is even if we can save this data on another partition, how can we extract the files hidden inside the image file called 'file_name.msr' ? If someone can find a way to extract the files from this image file i will be really pleased.

Reply 17 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

On my 1Tb disc i had a 400Gb secret area which i tried to expand to 500Gb. After that i could still see my disc and had accesss to the msr file in F:\secretzoneadmin folder, but i could not mount it because the expansion process corrupted it. So im afraid my dear friend shamandrums that our data are lost forever. You can stop looking for software to read the msr contents. the only software that can do that is samsungs secretzone algorithm which did the encryption on it. But the msr file is corrupted so even its creator cant read it. The data that i have lost were my collection of home movies which i spent 2 months transfering them on the samsung disc. Now i will buy another brand of hard disc other than samsung and start all over again. i know there are samsung people that read this forum but they pretend they are deaf so this is the last time i buy a samsung product. have a good day.

Reply 18 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

Well maybe you are right my friend but i am not losing my hope and i will buy a new hard disk (which won't be a samsung this time!) and i will save the .msr file to that disk for a future recovery. I have sent Samsung several e-mails but they haven't even pretended to fix their fault. They only suggest data recovery services or 3rd party data recovery softwares. They just sell their corrupted product and then they don't even care what happens to their costumers. The data loss we had was not our fault. It is the fault of Samsung and as you said it has been the last Samsung product that i have bought and i will not even buy a single Samsung product including other devices from now on. It is Samsung's loss after all.

Reply 19 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

Do you buy Microsoft's products?

Reply 20 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

Sorry but what does microsoft products have to do with this subject?

Reply 21 : Samsung S2 external hard drive 1TB - Volume Image Error

It fails, folks lose their works and they usually buy it again BUT learn a lesson.

No matter which maker you go with there is a risk it will lose your files. Either with some bundled app, fault or other.

It's a shame the makers are not warning folk about backups but here's the reason we came up in sessions about marketing some other storage system,. Ready?

Let's say that vendor A admonishes the users to keep a backup copy.

Vendor B doesn't mention backup.

Result? Consumers think that Vendor's B products must be more reliable.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Elitebook 8540w Still Not Stable Driver Available For Its NVIDIA QUADRO FX 1800M Card

Hello, it is almost one month I keep on trying with the HP support the stable version of the NVIDIA driver with no result.

The issues happened for the last (certified by HP and Microsoft) 261.28 and that of the NVIDIA web site: 267.76 driver.

The issues are of three kind: black screen (windows 7 may recover it), windows stop responding (a restart is needed to fix), random crashes (without blue screen).

Some older version of the same driver does not works; they have the same one or more of the three issues.

Now, as suggested by the HP online support I'm using the 188.12 (certified by HP) till the next crash. It has happened once with it!

How to fix it please?

I have contacted the NVIDIA support and after having tested their not HP customised driver the issues are occurred; they have send me again to HP.

Any help is welcome.

Thank you.

Thank you for your interest; I wonder: have you an elitebook like mine? have you ever happened those issues?

windows 7 professional 64 bit;

RAM 8GB;

Anyway, the crashes happened two times randomly without a blue screen; one of those times a message in an taskbar icon route me via a Microsoft link to a HP web site with an error code: 0117 related to the NVIDIA driver. That time was installed the driver version: 2667.76 (the more updated available on the NVIDIA site).

The first time with the last NVIDIA driver installed the one availale form the manufacturer web site.

Thank you.

You can see my laptop in my signature. It is the 17" version of your laptop. I had many problems with random crashing, HP replaced my laptop over and over and finally got it right now that I am on my 4th laptop.

On my first two laptops, the crashing was preceded by the fan suddenly spinning up to a very high level for 30 seconds, then he laptop would suddenly power down, and this would happen at least once a day. This was a fairly common problem for my type of laptop with quad-core CPUs early in release. The problem was identified and fixed by HP a while ago, but there could still be some laptops with this problem in stock with resellers.

My third laptop also crashed randomly, but there was no warning from the fan as with the previous laptops. These were completely random and very sudden. I might be typing one second and staring at a dead computer the next...this would happen on average once a day. HP replaced a bunch of hardware on 2 service calls but was unable to fix the problem.

If either of those situations sound familiar let me know.

The crashes happened only recently; I have bought my HP in february 2011, second hand from an ebay Austrian customer who bought it in november 2010; it is covered with a three years guarantee.

After one year of releases, I noticed the NVIDIA driver on the HP site has not a stable release yet!

To summarize: 1 crash with the HP and Windows certified driver version: 261.28, after some stop responding event; my laptop freezed and I had to restart it to regain its use;

1 crash with the latest NVIDIA driver 267.76; it happened black screen events with the same driver.

Black screen and stop responding events with early releases of the driver suggested by the chat support of HP.

Here attached the email sent me by HP after one of the crashes; this is the link to the web page generated by HP following the crash for surveying me about it: https://www.hpwebgen.com/conf.aspx?u...key=1792678616

Now it is installed the 188.12 releases of the driver as suggested by HP, it lacks several features of the graphic card!

Thank you.

I'm having the same problems over here. I bought my 8540w in september 2010. With that driver i didnt have any problems, until i installed the 261.28 version and the 267.67 version. Every time i play a game, the screen will turn black and the game freezes and shuts down.

Does rolling back to 188 work without these errors?

Reply 6 : Elitebook 8540w Still Not Stable Driver Available For Its NVIDIA QUADRO FX 1800M Card

Thank you for your interest; I guess the HP elitebook 8540w customers are not so much in order to urge HP to fix any issue; they are not easy at all if decided to buy and use such an advanced "machine"; so it is always useful to team up to speed up HP fixes.

I do not know if the attempt I'm doing to find a fix is applicable to your laptop; so many might be the differences in terms of hardware and software configuration, nevertheless I will tell you what I'm doing.

First, verify you have installed all of the latest drivers for your operating system from the HP site: if you run the windows 7 professional 64 bit is this: HP EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

There you'll find the latest BIOS upgrade - unfortunately it is not being detected by the HP SoftPaq Download Manager - so all of the suggestions have to be made "manually".

Update the BIOS first; it is like a normal software installation. Go to the following NVIDIA driver list: NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search select the graphic card and it will list all of the drivers available for downloading. Install and try starting from the latest beta and test which of it is the most stable!

I'm testing the: 267.24 since yesterday.

I would like you to let us know all of your tests in order to be useful to all of the elitebook users in this forum.

Thank you.

the nvidia timeout error has been (mostly) fixed on the 8740W with a vbios update.

however i have yet to find an update for the FX1800M, which would provide a similar solution.

I need to you go into control panel, 'admistrative tools' then 'computer management' then 'event viewer' and look at the 'critical errors' and post them here. they are sometimes also called 'bug check's

The TIMEOUT error (stop 0x116) is a driver problem with the Nvidia Software and the Intel Chipset

Stop 0x124 is most common error i've found on our systems, and this was fixed with a vbios update on the 8740W but nothing as yet fixed the issues on the 8540 i have, but i'm using the beta driver for games, and it seems to be more stable.

Contrary to this, i have noticed people with factory installs of their operating systems have this problem, my machines are all reinstalled.

Post your bugchecks here and i'll see if i can help.

nice, just updated to the new beta driver 270.xx (clean install option). And it works fine. First i couldnt even play dragon age 1. the screen blacked out within a second. Now the game just rolls on.

Also dragon age 2 is going very smooth. This game also blacked out when there where a lot of enemies. Now it goes smooth with the graphics.

Maybe this is good for you too, cypher

Dell Precision 6500 resolution question

I prefer glossy screens because pictures look the best on them but I don't like the 1920X1080 because you can hardly read the text.

My question is if get the WXGA+ LCD; is this glossy?

If I choose the WUXGA option in order to get the glossy screen, can I run it at 1440X900 instead without impacting the way things look on the screen? I had a HP envy that ran at 1920X1080 which when I tried to lower the resolution it impacted it heavily

thanks,

Except for the M6500 Covet Edition, which still uses a RGBLED Matte Panel, but it is covered on top with a layer of glass for the glossy effect.

Reply 3 : Dell Precision 6500 resolution question

Wait I thought Dell's TrueLife was a glossy finish...

Reply 4 : Dell Precision 6500 resolution question

TrueLife is not offered on the M4500 or M6500. The Edge to Edge glass on the M6500 Covet is the way Star Forge stated. It is Gorolla Glass.

Reply 5 : Dell Precision 6500 resolution question

No, it's not glossy, nor are the WUXGA screen options, but 1920x1200 in 17" won't make things as small as 1920x1080 in 15.6" so I'd still suggest the 1920x1200 display. Especially if you can afford the RGBLED upgrade.

However, if you can wait just a few more weeks, the M6600 is coming out. The M6600 will offer 1920x1080 in 17.3" which will make things larger than 1920x1200 in 17"

Plus, the base resolution of 1600x900 in 17.3" is better than 1440x900 in 17" in my opinion (even though it's 16:9)

Samsung have a global download site (there is a link to it on the US download site) and the NT series are listed there. However, I would expect the hardware drivers to be the same as for the European X11 for which the downloads are here.

Problem with Dell 2335dn MFP printer

I have a problem with Dell 2335dn MFP printer. Let me first say, it is run to router to go to every computer. We have 5 in our office. 2 are wireless and the other 3 are wired to the router. I have the software installed on each individual computer. Now I can print to the printer fine for a while but then i can't after a while. It is the like the printer driver and all have been deleted but they have not been. I think their is an IP conflict with the printer but do not know how to solve it. I could be wrong though, could you please help me out.

Reply 1 : Problem with Dell 2335dn MFP printer

So little to work with that I have to write call Dell and let them ask all those questions.

Be sure the printer is not going to sleep.

CF-74 Touchscreen compatability

I have got my hands on a CF-74 which obviously has screen damage. Unfortunately the seller misled me about the RAM and the power supply, so I am at the moment unable to see if anything works.

Too be honest I am not particularly bothered about a touchscreen replacement and would be happy with just an ordinary display. Having said that I might be able to source a touchscreen from a CF-72. Looks like they are both 13.3".

Is it likely that Panasonic used the same touchscreen across the model ranges in the same size and that they will be interchangable?

Is it going to be possible to replace the touchscreen with a regular screen?

Cheers!

Reply 1 : CF-74 Touchscreen compatability

The touchscreen is a panel that goes in front of the regular display. I removed one from a CF29 and replaced it with clear plexiglas.

Reply 2 : CF-74 Touchscreen compatability

Thanks!

I guess its going to be a case of whay exactly is damaged. Being first in the line of fire, the touchscreen must be the most vunerable. I have taken a regular screen apart and marvelled at all the layers!

I am counting that Panasonic rationalised their screen as I can't stand people throwing things away that are repairable economically!

The 72 ts is a serial driver, the newer models all use usb, (29/30/19/74/18/73 etc..)

Reply 4 : CF-74 Touchscreen compatability

Drat!

Oh well, if I am patient and observant, perhaps a screen will become available from a compatable model.

There is a distinct possibility that the seller has been less than honest about it functioning anyway. If its DOA its unsalvagable.

Thanks for the replies!

I thought the CF-18 and CF-29 used a serial touchscreen.

Reply 6 : CF-74 Touchscreen compatability

I am pretty sure that the 29 is usb, in my sleepiness the last cpl days I may be wrong on that one, but I know the 30 era machines on are for sure usb

No one have any suggestings about a suitable replacement?

Pull it apart and get the number from the back of the bare lcd. Search for that part. Get a piece of clear plexiglas cut at ur local glass shop and Robert's your mother's brother.

Touch Screen Question

I was hoping it would be a common or garden variety that could be salvaged from a lesser laptop. The closest I can find is a TM133XGA0201 but there are no pics to check the similarity.

Just ordered a 17 XPS and have question....

Guys i really would appreciate your help. I just ordered a 17in XPS and i have some questions. We all know most of the CSR aren't knowlegable enough to answer them:

1.

The most important question i have is i've seen a lot of discussion on which machines come with 4 DIMM Slots (16GB Max) and which don't. I REALLY REALLY hope my configuration comes with 4 DIMMs because the work i do i definitely want to go with 16GB. From the discussion what i understand is that You will get 4 DIMM slots when you get the Better Video Card (555) and a 9-Cell Battery. Thats the only reason i even got the better video card. I'm not a gamer. Can anyone tell me 100% if i will have 4 dimm slots?

2. You will see below that i ordered the better screen along with a Blu-Ray drive. I didn't get the 3d glasses. I'm pretty sure that i can do 3d since i got the better screen (i pretty sure i have the same screen as the 3d version). I will just have to order a pair of cheap 3d glasses from someplace. Can anyone confirm?

I would appreciate anyones help especially with question #1.

thanks....

You need the 3D model, quad core i7, and the 3gb 555m in order to have 4 DIMM slots.

But i'm pretty sure it is same thing as the 3d model. Look at this specs:

1. I do have a quad core. 2720QM

2. I do have the 3gb 555m

3. The Screen is exactly the same: 17.3in FHD WLED AG (1920x1080)

The only difference is the 3d version comes with the glasses.

Apparently the 3D model and the non-3D model have different motherboards, so even if you do get the right CPU and GPU but don't have the 3D, you won't get 4 DIMM slots, Of course, I doubt anybody's got a 1080p non-3D XPS 17 yet, so when those start coming in we'll know.

Ya if only the CSR knew there from a while in the ground they we would know. They make it WAY to hard to tell if your getting 4 DIMM or not. If you call up and try to get a straight story plan on being on the phone for a couple of hours.

Dell XPS 1530 won't power up suddenly after updates from Dell

I replaced the screen on my Dell XPS m1530 today. It powered up, I checked it out and then proceeded to allow the 'automatic updates'.

Suddenly, it powered down and now I can't get it to start at all. Occasionally, I get a glimmer of the blue led behind the power button when it is pushed but the laptop will NOT power up.

Any thoughts?

I had it working then it died after the software updates...so the screen install was successful....

How do I get it back?

Thanks

iPad 2: ?

i am planning on purchasing the new iPad with the performance boost and xbmc in mind. Since I could not find any info indicating if it is worth it, I thought I would ask here assuming someone has experience using the ipad 2 with xbmc.
Since most of my movie library are full blu-ray which obviously have extremely high bitrates, do you think the new iPad's performance boost will be able to handle the extremely demanding video? I am sceptical as I know its a long shot and understand the hardware limitations of the first iPad, and yet I remain hopeful and would love to hear from anyone with first hand experience with the new device and xbmc.

Reply 1 : iPad 2: ?

There is no big change in the display so the higher bit rates are uncalled for. Something's unclear here.

Both are at 1024 768 pixels which begs why you would send more than that?

Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

Since Vaio Z Series (VPZ1) has audio managed by NVIDIA chipset, I'm thinking about buying the dock station PRZ10 that delivers only a DVI-D connection...

I read at dvi wiki that using a passive adapter like HDMI female to DVI male 24+1, NVIDIA HD audio drivers should send audio through dock station DVI port

Could be possible ?

Reply 1 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

I've wondered this myself. I HIGHLY doubt it will work. But there is a chance that the DVI port is just a pass through of sorts and it actually might work. When I get a dock someday... I'll be sure to try it.

Reply 2 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

I bought this: For only $1.97 each when QTY 50+ purchased - DVI-D Single Link Male to HDMI Female adapter | DVI <--> HDMI and can't get audio through HDMI.

Reply 3 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

well, this guy tells st about that ATi Radeon graphic cards that manage digital audio too, can do it

Enable Audio Over DVI and HDMI in Windows XP or Windows Vista

he tells that proper adapter must be something like ATi DVI to HDMI one, and if you search at ebay

Original ATi Radeon DVI-D 24 to HDMI with Audio Adapter | eBay

and the one "xxGenericSNxx" talks about is kinda different... look at pictures is like it seems that the 24+1 works only...

Reply 4 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

you need dual link that is all, look at that ATI adapter, it is dual link

I bet this would work

Walmart.com: Link Depot 2m Male Gold Plated DVI-D Dual Link to High Speed HDMI Cable: Computers

Reply 5 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

Bought the cable, didn't work...

Reply 6 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

so try the adapter then?

Reply 7 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

bought the adapter at ebay, item located in Hong Kong, so I've to wait 3 weeks.... :|

however I think that is not possible 'cos HD audio from NVIDIA only was setted to go through HDMI port... maybe some software hack could fix the problem, but nothing found yet...

Any idea welcome!

Reply 8 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

I have a dock now, perhaps I'll do some experiments. I don't care all that much about HDMI audio because I am going to loose it when I get a Matrox dual monitor setup, but it will be interesting to see if it is in there.

Reply 9 : Vaio Z dock station PRZ10 DVI Audio output?

congrats about your new dock!! hope you'll find st through dvi audio... I hate connectig every time hdmi cable haha... anyway it helps me a lot with all the rest cables: ipod nano usb, AC power, wireless keyboard and mouse, external bd player/burner (I've the Z dvd version), ethernet... but... Audio HD, I read sw about a usb audio card, but thinking if it can supports codecs like 5.1 LMPCM or DTS-HD... mmm

No WiFi access with battery poqer on Balanced power plan

I am unable to connect toWiFi on battery power when I'm usimg the Balanced power plan ('connected', 'no internet access'). I have tried setting WiFi for 'Maximum performance' with no success. I have no problems connecting to WiFi via the High Performance power plan using battery power. I also have no WiFi issues via any power plan when plugged in.

I have updated to the latest Realtek driver (from their site) and the latest BIOS. Is there any way to make WiFi work via the Balanced power plan? My device: Libretto W100.Thanks.

Reply 1 : No WiFi access with battery poqer on Balanced power plan

It appears that this related to a Windows 7 bug. However, the solution doesn't work for me:

You may experience connectivity issues or performance issues when you connect a mobile PC that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7 to a wireless access point

Try a system restore back to a date when you didn't have the problem (or has it always been this way?).

XPS L502 Comes with Chicklet Keyboard

Man... I got my XPS 15 L501 less than 6 months ago, and they've already changed the design slightly. The new ones have chicklet style keyboards that I'm quite fond of (I like the extra space between the keys).

Does anyone know:
  1. Can I replace the keyboard on my L501 with the new chicklet style keyboard shipping with the L502?
  2. And if so... how difficult is it? (I'm quite comfortable working on desktop PCs... not much experience breaking down laptops)

Reply 1 : XPS L502 Comes with Chicklet Keyboard

It may be possible, but I noticed some differences between the keyboard mounts and connections when taking apart both of them. The metalloid aluminum cover is also a slightly different color and may be a little different as well due to the different connections.
